Where the dolphins are

Spinner dolphins hunt at night in deep water and come into shallow, sheltered lagoons after sunrise to rest. Marsa Alam has the two best lagoons in Egypt for this: Samadai, close and zoned, with a pod of about 60, and Sataya, remote and huge, with 100 to 200 animals. Wadi El Gemal National Park adds a third option with dolphins plus turtles and an island.

How the encounter works

You do not chase dolphins. The boat moors outside the rest zone, the zodiac takes small groups to its edge, and you float with the guide while the pod passes under and around you. Some days they play and spin; some days they cruise slowly. Life jackets are available and children from 4 can join with a parent.

Which trip to choose

Half a day and small kids: the Samadai speedboat. A full day with lunch and no early start: Samadai full day. The biggest pod: Sataya full day. Sunrise with the pod and no other boats: Sataya overnight. Variety with an island: Wadi El Gemal.
