Samadai vs Sataya: which dolphin house should you choose?
Distance, pod size, pickup times and prices side by side, from the guides who run both reefs every week.

Marsa Alam has two reefs with resident spinner-dolphin pods, and every guest asks the same question in the first email: Samadai or Sataya? The short answer is that Samadai is close and easy and Sataya is far and bigger. The longer answer depends on how much of a day you want to give it.
Samadai in one paragraph
Sha'ab Samadai, called Dolphin House, sits 11 km off Marsa Alam. A speedboat gets you there in 15 minutes; a day boat in an hour. The lagoon is zoned, guided groups float at the edge of the rest area, and the pod is about 60 animals. You can do it in half a day and be back at the hotel by 11:30.
Sataya in one paragraph
Sataya Reef is 105 km south, off Hamata. The drive takes two hours and the boat another hour and a half. The lagoon is several times bigger, there are far fewer boats, and the pod is 100 to 200 animals. Pickup is at 06:00 and you are back around 18:30. Sleep on the boat and you get the sunrise session, when the pod comes home and the lagoon is flat and empty.

Our honest recommendation
If it is your first dolphin trip, or you have children under 8, or you only have a morning: Samadai by speedboat. If you want the encounter people fly here for and can handle an early start: Sataya, and if you can, the overnight. Many guests do both in one week and nobody has regretted it.
